The Wall of Knowledge TM

Some of the Wall of Knowledge

Books are the fuel that makes our brains run

They're portable, don't need an external power source, don't need to be backed up, and they withstand beatings that would destroy the hardiest laptop. All in all, not a bad way to disseminate information.

We spend hundreds of dollars per month buying books and periodicals to stay on top of what's happening in our industry. Specific projects may require some new bit of knowledge so we're always getting new information to help us stay abreast of technology that is applicable to our customers' needs. In addition, each employee has an annual book allowance to purchase books on whatever subject they choose (people tend to stick to technical topics but if someone wanted a book on the mating rituals of sub-Saharan swallows, that'd be OK too.)

Some books we buy solely on the reputation of the author or publisher (you can't go wrong with any networking book by W. Richard Stevens or any of O'Reilly Associates excellent Nutshell books for example). Others we buy because there isn't really anything else out there. Either way, it's been our experience that many times learning only one or two important things can save days of painful hacking and debugging.

Collectively, we refer to our bookshelves as The Wall of Knowledge TM.

In addition to just buying books, our staff occasionally takes the time to actually read one or two of the books they've bought. Check out some of our reviews.
