Yes, we're at it again. Release 4.0 of the STG office wasn't big enough and we had to "upgrade" a few more times to release 4.2. Since moving to this office, we've continued to grow and had to add several new sections to our office to accommodate our growth.
More offices, more cubes, more computers, more development tools, more phones, more desks, more chairs, more wires (over 4 miles of 100Mbit+ network wiring at last count), and most importantly, more people!
The
Labs
We often find ourselves working on new equipment long before it's released. Not just little pocket-sized things but sometimes big things too. Interested in sharing your office or cube with a laser printer the size of a refrigerator that makes about as much noise as a Boeing 747 taking off? Neither are we!
To make life more pleasant, we have dedicated space to serve as development and testing labs. Keeps noisy equipment away from us and helps to make it easier to co-locate related equipment without crowding you out of your own office.
When you've got as much and as wide a variety of high-tech equipment as we do, it's a non-trivial task to get and keep things working. To help in that area, we've invested in a dedicated computing center with separate power and AC to keep things going.
Our computing center houses servers and workstations from just about every major vendor to provide the depth of development and testing capabilities needed to develop products for our customers.
Each system is racked and protected by Uninterruptible Power Supplies for maximum up time. Easy access to the front and rear of each system make it a breeze to connect and configure systems for development and testing. An array of tape drives provides the protection for every single byte on our main development systems.
We're especially proud of our library, or as we call it, the Wall of Knowledge.
We take having the information needed to do our job very seriously. Seriously enough to spend several hundred dollars per month on technical books, documentation, subscriptions to technical journals, and other general information. In addition to purchasing books as a company, we also have an employee book allowance for our staff to buy books on whatever subject they want that become their personal property (see the Bookshelf page for more details.)
No tour of STG would be complete without a visit to our kitchen. We stay on top of keeping the free drinks and snacks stocked. Our latest popular beverages are the full lines of Sobe Teas, Jones Sodas, and Mistic Teas. We have real live beverage trucks pull up and deliver this stuff by the case load. It took one of our distributors several years to realize that we didn't sell drinks but bought it all for internal consumption ("You mean you guys just give it away?".) That's exactly what we mean - the only catch is you need to be an employee (or our UPS delivery driver who stops in for a free drink almost every day.)
Raindrops keep falling on your head? We know the feeling! Our employees benefit from a whole bunch of inside parking that we rotate among the staff so everyone gets a shot at staying warm, cool, dry, or whatever (you know what they say about Chicago weather - wait 5 minutes and it'll change.)
Well relax and check out the STG fish tanks! We're talking color, action, and excitement. It's like a waterlogged Wild Kingdom in there with tons of fresh and saltwater little buddies waiting to make your acquaintance.
Big fish, little fish, cute fish - cichlids, discus, marine, and game fish (not all in the same tank mind you) - all doing the sorts of wacky things fish do.
We've got to give a special thanks to Dave McLaughlin and his staff at Waterhouse Aquariums (708-749-8239) and the folks at Scott's Pet Shop right here in Westchester for helping us to get our fish going and keeping them going.
