Project UDI

The UDI Reference Environment for Linux is now available. View the UDI for Linux Information page and to get to the download links.

Why UDI?

Developing system level software is tough and it isn't getting any easier. Multiple platforms, multiple architectures, and multiple operating systems all conspire to keep us busy. Just keeping a non-trivial driver abreast of changes to a single OS can be a time consuming venture.

How does the prospect of a real, live, honest to goodness, portable device driver sound? What if this driver was portable across SCO UNIX, UnixWare, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, and Linux? What if this driver worked reliably as the OS was upgraded? What if this same binary driver worked across all operating systems running on the same hardware platform?

Well, if you're anything like us, you'll say "That sounds great!"

That's just what we said. In fact, we didn't just say it, we did something about it: we joined Project UDI! By joining forces with our engineering peers at companies like Adaptec, HP, IBM, Intel, Interphase, Lockheed, SCO, Sun, and others, we're helping to make this tantalizing prospect a reality.

So what's in it for me?

By providing a common interface for device driver access across multiple operating systems, it's now possible to write portable device drivers which can operate on a wide range of platforms from a single code base. This can reduce development, porting, and support costs as well as helping to ensure that UDI-compliant drivers will keep working across major (and minor) operating system upgrades.

The use and support of UDI will offer our customers significant benefits:

This is powerful medicine!

How does STG fit into all of this?

STG is an active participant in the UDI standards and reference implementation effort. Specifically, STG is developing the Linux UDI reference environment.

But our involvement doesn't end there. In addition to working on the UDI environment itself, STG is also an experienced UDI driver developer (more knowledgeable UDI developers available for working on your UDI driver projects than anywhere else on earth we'd bet!). If you're looking for the fastest way to develop a UDI software product, put STG on your short list.

Who all's involved with this operation?

A few folks you might have heard of like:
